“It’s the Khmer culture. It’s what I learned from the
rice field that I spoke of; what touched me the most.
And I’m proud to say that I’m a Cambodian.”
-Chinary Ung
This image is a detail of the Cambodian tapestry that hangs in Ung’s home featuring three distinct strata, or levels of being. The lowest is the physical, mortal level in which we all live. The middle is reserved for sacred dance and other priestly pursuits. The highest level is spiritual, celestial, immortal. Khmer textiles are a vitally important art form in the culture.
